Southern Island: Weedon

15 04 2013

Fishing, hiking, kayaking, picnicking — all things we are Southerners are used to enjoying on our nearby islands. But when you can add the interest of archaeological history, we’ve really got something special.

Outside of St. Petersburg/Tampa area is the Weedon Island Preserve. The Weeden Native American culture left behind many elaborately decorated sacred ceramics which can be viewed at the Weedon Island Preserve Cultural and Natural History Center. The Hall Gallery features displays of state and local artists and photographers. If you’re planning a trip, or can’t make it sometime soon, the collection of Native American artifacts has been digitized online as a virtual tour.

Be sure to take a stroll down the boardwalk to the observation tower to observe wildlife and birdwatch. On a clear day, you can see the city of Tampa before heading back to the mainland.
