Southern Music Week: Darius Rucker a.k.a. Hootie

5 07 2011

I was a teenager in the 90’s, so it was impossible to not drive around in that first hand-me-down Corolla (with no air!) from Dad without sooner or later hearing the smooth voice of Hootie & the Blowfish singing their hit “Only Wanna Be With You.”

Front man Darius Rucker and the other members met at the University of South Carolina, and formed in the 80’s and had great success throughout the 90’s, but it wasn’t until the Capitol Fourth celebration aired on PBS last year that I was reminded how much I loved the gravelly yet smooth voice of Hootie, or as he is currently known, Darius Rucker.

He recently released his second country album, Charleston, SC 1966 (what a great title)! And, Rucker won Best New Artist award from the CMA last year. This Southern boy has even performed at the Grand Ol Opry, so he’s a bona fide country act now!

If it’s been a while since you’ve heard Hootie, give him a listen as you take that summer road trip. And come on back the rest of this week, as we’ve got some great music suggestions for your summer soundtrack!
