Lavender

13 05 2010

When you think of the south and all of our floral and fauna, more than likely, you probably don’t think of lavender.   Even so, lavender grows quite well in the south and if you can avoid the pests, lavender not only adds color to your garden but also warmth to your home.

The scent of lavender is known to encourage sleep.  As a child my father would often place satchels of lavender in the pillows of our house guests.  It is now a tradition for all of their guests.  Satchels of lavender are also good places for drawers with delicates or in the closet with odor producing shoes.  Lavender dries well, as a result, it can be used for some time after cutting.  You are only required to hang it upside down and enjoy the gentle scent and beauty.  I arrived home a few weeks ago only to find a bundle hanging in my bathroom. It was lovely.

The lavender in the pictures is from our garden.
