Whip It

3 02 2010

I don’t get out to the movies much anymore, but I do have a Netflix membership.  I was ever so happy to see that little red envelope deliver, Whip It, last week.

Whip It is the classic coming of age story, but with a southern and new twist as the main character, Bliss, (love that name) discovers the world of rough, and dirty roller derby in nearby Austin, Texas.  As it would see fit, roller derby and Bliss’ lifestyle do not meet the standard of her hometown and her mother’s desires for a path down beauty pageant row.  What is a girl to do in life, follow her family or pursue her own path?

Although a bit predictable, which was comforting, the movie was great. The scenes are perfectly accompanied by a mix match soundtrack that includes everyone from Dolly Parton, the Ramones, the Peaches, the Breeders, and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah.  You will be pleasantly surprised by the cast of Jimmy Fallon, Marcia Gay Harden, Ellen Page, Drew Barrymore (her directorial debut), Kristen Wiig, Daniel Stern (where has he been?), Juliette Lewis, Eve, and Andrew Wilson (the eldest Wilson brother).

Ok, now this movie is not your Wedding Planner, Sleepless in Seattle or BBC classic.  It is pretty much an indie showcase of talent.  With that in mind, be prepared to step outside the box or screen.  Personally, I loved it and found myself laughing out loud.  Different can be fun.

Have you seen Whip It yet?  What did you think?
