Tuesday Tip: Foiled Again!

15 07 2009

Ok, so clearly I’m on a aluminum foil kick lately, but it just seems like an all-purpose item, so in addition to last week’s ingenious (cut down my ironing time this week! How about yours?) idea to cover that ironing board in foil, here are a few more tips involving that good ol’ pantry staple.

  • When scissors get dull, layer about 7 pieces of foil and cut through them, and the scissors are sharp once again.
  • Put jewelry in aluminum foil and put in some salt solution and leave it overnight. The next morning they look like new.
  • To soften the brown sugar, wrap it in foil and bake it in a 300 degree oven for 5 minutes.
  • Ball up some foil and use it to clean the gunk off your grill or pots and pans. It cleans just as well as a wire scrub brush or a steel wool scrub pad.
  • Makes great gift wrapping paper.
  • Half way through the baking process, take a length of foil and wrap around the edge of your pie, securing with a metal paper clip. This will prevent your crust from browning too much.
  • Put a length of foil on your oven rack to catch spills from pizzas or whatever makes a mess in your sparkly clean oven. Make sure to spray the foil with a little cooking oil.

Some great household items just never outwear their usefulness! What are your tricks with foil?
