Steel Magnolias

17 03 2009

I have a confession to make. I’ve never, in my whole Southern life, seen Steel Magnolias. Until last night, that is.

In my defense, I was only in kindergarten when it came out, but I remember my good friend, Ashley, sitting on my bed one night when I was 12 years old, for a slumber party. We were talking about our favorite movies, and I’m sure I said something like “Aladdin,” but she was already sophisticated and Southern enough to say, “Steel Magnolias.” I’ve been meaning to watch it ever since.

I know, I know. I deserve to be horse-whipped, calling myself a Southerner. But I heard it was sad. And I don’t like to cry.

But cry I did. And a lot of laughing too.

From Steel Magnolias we get such classic Southern quotes such as:

“Pink is my signature color.”

“The only thing that separates us from the animals is our ability to accessorize.”

“I’d rather stand on my lips than talk bad about someone.”

If you don’t have anything nice to say about anybody, come sit by me!”

And of course: “Iced tea is the house wine of the South.”

And with a cast of Dolly Parton, Julia Roberts, and Dylan McDermott, if you haven’t seen this gem, please, do so immediately. Move this one up to the top of your Netflix list!

What are your favorite Southern movies?

There are so many signature lines in this movie I wouldn’t know where to start or end. I have loved this movie since the seventh grade!
