Southern Islands Week: St. Simons Island

9 03 2011

Right next door to Jekyll Island, our featured Southern island from yesterday, is St. Simons Island. Located near Brunswick, Georgia, St. Simons and Little St. Simons are part of the Golden Isles of Georgia.

What makes them “Golden,” you may ask? Well, its many visitors and residents will tell you a great many things. Not the least of which is the famed St. Simons Island Lighthouse.

The lighthouse, nicknamed St. Simons Light, guides ships around the island’s sandbars. It was built in 1810, but was recently renovated to restore its Victorian glory. You can visit the lighthouse’s museum and climb to the top to view St. Simons Island from the best vantage point around.
